"Whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin." Mark 3:29
Yup, your superhero imaginary friend Jesus and his daddy "God" will pretty much clear you of everything including rape and murder as long as you say "sorry" before you kick off, but if you deny the "Holy Spirit" or "Holy Ghost" then there's no hope. It's the one unpardonable sin.
But, what if you did doubt? Even one time for even a moment? If you believe the Bible is the "Word of God" and inviolable then it means there is not hope for you. You are damned eternally to Hell. That's a bit harsh don't you think?
It would seem so, since the launch of the Blasphemy Challenge where secular humanists and atheists directly challenge the belief in god and the holy spirit by placing videos on Youtube stating their rejection of the doctrine, many evangelical Christians are turning cartwheels trying to square the circle.
After all, it's not good for recruiting if you tell people that everything is forgivable except what seems a completely innocuous flash of rational thought. Surely the big come on for Christianity is the laziness of the doctrine whereby you can do and say whatever you choose to and about your fellow human beings as long as you are "sorry" in the end or you are doing it out of concern for their souls. Having that little phrase from Mark in there sort of puts that to the doubt.
So, some evangelicals who believe the Bible is literal and should not be "interpreted" are now "interpreting" that phrase to say it only applied to the Pharisees of the time of Jesus Christ. Yup, the folks who consider it a "sin" to "reinterpret" the Bible (especially any sections condemning LGBT people) are doing just that to try to keep folks from being turned off by a petty and egotistical god.
But, really, when you think of it, is it any surprise to find that in there? Certainly not. Even in the Old Testament god puts people dissing him above such serious infractions as murder, rape, and theft. Seems a bit self-serving to me.
So, take a look at The Blasphemy Challenge. They're giving away 1001 DVD copies of the film "The God Who Wasn't There" to the first people to post their own video denying the existence of god and the holy spirit.
